Redblacks sign former NFL running back and returner Akeem Hunt

Ottawa Redblacks have signed former NFL running back and returner Akeem Hunt, per sources.

Hunt spent three seasons in the NFL, two with the Houston Texans and the other as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. He rushed 45 times for 228 yards — 5.1 yards per carry — caught 13 passes for 99 yards and returned 35 kick-offs for 824 yards.

After going unselected in the 2015 NFL draft, Hunt attended training camp with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent. He was released and spent one week on the Baltimore Ravens’ practice roster before landing in Houston.

The 26-year-old last played for the Orlando Apollos in the now defunct Alliance of American Football. Hunt played eight games carrying the ball 37 times for 185 yards and one touchdown and caught five passes for 49 yards.

The Covington, Georgia played NCAA football at Purdue University rushing for 2,035 yards and 11 touchdowns while recording 100 receptions for 841 yards and six touchdowns. As a returner, Hunt produced 1,747 yards and three touchdowns.

At Purdue’s NFL pro day, Hunt ran a 4.36 40-yard time, 4.11 short shuttle, 6.71 three-cone with a 37-inch vertical, 10-foot-two broad jump and pumped out 14 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Hunt could be dynamic on the large CFL field.
